The path forward

Treat the craft like a product before treating it like a business.

A beautiful candle is the beginning. A repeatable, safely tested candle with a clear customer and profitable price is the foundation of a brand.

01

Perfect

Document formulas and complete controlled burn testing.

02

Position

Choose a clear audience, promise, voice, and visual direction.

03

Price

Account for materials, labor, overhead, fees, and profit.

04

Present

Create compliant labels, thoughtful packaging, and strong imagery.

05

Prove

Launch small, listen closely, and refine from real sales data.

Know the numbers

Pricing should pay for the entire business—not only the wax inside the jar.

Start with total unit cost.

Materials + Packaging + Labor + Overhead + Selling Fees = Total Cost

Then apply a pricing method that supports your target margin, wholesale plans, discounts, and future reinvestment. Do not confuse markup with margin: they are not the same calculation.

Candle business FAQ

Questions to answer before launch.

How many candles should I launch with?

A focused collection is easier to test, explain, photograph, stock, and improve. Many new brands benefit from launching with a small core range instead of trying to serve every scent preference immediately.

How do I know a candle is ready to sell?

The formula should be repeatable and fully documented, and every wax–wick–fragrance–vessel combination should complete a controlled burn test. Packaging and warning labels should also be finalized before sale.

Do I need product liability insurance?

Because candles involve flame and heat, product liability coverage is an important risk-management step. Discuss the business and sales channels with a qualified insurer and confirm local licensing, tax, and labeling requirements.

Should I sell online or at local markets first?

Local markets provide fast feedback and face-to-face learning. Online sales offer reach but require stronger photography, shipping systems, and customer acquisition. The best starting channel is the one you can operate consistently and measure.

How should I price wholesale candles?

Build retail and wholesale pricing together. The wholesale price must still cover total cost and profit while leaving the retailer enough room for its margin. If the numbers do not work, improve cost, size, packaging, or positioning before offering wholesale.

Build a small collection people can understand—and remember.
